BLACK PEPPER PLANT

Pepper has been used since antiquity as spice and medicine. It is the world's No1 spice and essential in European cuisine. The spiciness is due to piperine. The word 'pepper' is derived from the Sanskrit pippali and via the Latin piper. Thus: D: Pfeffer, F: poivre, Nl: peper etc. Eng. word comes from Old English pipor. Black pepper are the still-green unripe drupes. White pepper is the seed alone. Green pepper are unripe drupes treated with sulfur dioxide or freeze-drying to remain green. Red pepper are fruits of S American Schinus molle and S. terebinthifolius.

Doma iz JV Afrike. Listi imajo močan vonj podoben origanu. Drobno nasekljani so fantastični za začinjanje govedine, jagnjetine in divjačine. Rastlino uporabljajo tudi v tradicionalni medicini, med drugim za zdravljenje kašlja, bolečega grla, zamešenega nosu, infekcij, revmatizma in napenjanja. V Indoneziji porodnice pijejo juho iz listov za stimulacijo tvorbe materinega mleka. Hung čan je v prehranski industriji zamenjava za origano, zato ga vsebuje mnogo proizvodov.

Native to SE Africa. The leaves are strongly oregano - like flavored. Finely chopped, they are excellent to flavour beef, lamb and game. It also has many traditional medicinal uses like treatment of coughs, sore throats and nasal congestion, infections, rheumatism and flatulence. In Indonesia it is used in soup to stimulate lactation after childbirth. It is also a substitute for oregano in the food trade and food labelled 'oregano-flavoured' may well contain this herb.

Doma je povsod po severni polobli.

Čaj iz korenin pomaga pri porodu, blaži krče in zdravi drisko. Liste so včasih polagali v čevlje, da so absorbirali znoj. Gosji petoprstnik ponekod gojijo zaradi užitnih korenin. Na Tibetu, v Lhasi jih skuhajo z maslom in sladkorjem (droma) kot novoletno jed.

Ime Anserina pomeni 'gosji ' (Lat: Anser), saj so z rastlino včasih krmili gosi. Okrog gosjega petoprstnika se je spletla bogata folklora. Francozi ga imenujejo richette (bogat), saj je narejen iz srebra (listi) in zlata (cvetovi). Odganjal naj bi tudi čarovnice in zle duhove.

GOOSE GRASS / SILVERWEED

Native to temperate Northern Hemisphere.Tea from the roots helps delivery, is an antispasmodic and treats diarrhea. The plant was also put in shoes to absorb sweat. It is cultivated for its edible roots. In Tibet they are served cooked in butter and sugar (droma) at the New Year's celebrations in Lhasa.

The name Anserina means 'of the goose' (Lat: Anser) because the plant was used to feed geese. A rich folklore has developed around Silverweed. In French it is called richette as it is made of silver (leaves) and gold (flowers). It is also said to ward of witches and evil spirits.

Starodaven sadež, omenjen v Evropi že v železni dobi v Homerjevih pesnitvah. Ime izvira iz latinskega pomum = apple in granatus=seeded. Doma je v Perziji in zahodni Himalaji, gojijo pa ga po Sredozemlju, Bližnjem Vzhodu in vse do Afganistana že nekaj tisočletij. Sadni sok vsebuje ca 16% potreb po vitaminu C za odrasle (na 100 ml), veliko vitamina B5, kalija in polifenolov (tanini in flavonoidi) and flavonoids). Nari so bogati z vlakninami, te so prisotne izključno v užitnih semenih, ki vsebujejo tudi nenasičena olja in mikrohranila. Sadež lahko jeste svež ali prpravljen kot sok, omake, čatni, nabodala, liker, jogurt, džem ali reliš. V Ayurvedi sta lupina sadeža in skorja drevesa zdravilo za drisko, grižo in notranje zajedalce. Semena in sok so tonik za srce in grlo. Astringentne lastnosti izkoriščajo za zaustavljanje krvavenja iz nosa in dlesni, zategovanje kože, učvrsčevanje povešenih prsi (mešanica z gorčičnim oljem) in za zdravljenje hemeroidov. Sadni sok, apliciran po kapljicah, upočasnjuje nastanek kataraktov.

POMEGRANATE

An ancient fruit, mentioned in Europe in Iron-Age Greek Mythology in the Homeric hymns. The name derives from Latin pomum = apple and granatus=seeded. Native to Persia and the western Himalayan range and has been cultivated in the Mediterranean, Middle East all the way to Afghanistan for several millennia. Fruit juice provides about 16% of an adult's daily vitamin C requirement (per 100 ml), a lot of vitamin B5, potassium and polyphenols (tannins and flavonoids). Pomegranates are high-fiber, which is entirely contained in the edible seeds which also supply unsaturated oils and micronutrients.The fruit can be eaten raw or prepared as a juice, sauce, chutney, kebab, liqueur, yogurt, jam or relish. In Ayurveda the fruit rind and tree bark are a remedy against diarrhea, dysentery and intestinal parasites. The seeds and juice are a tonic for the heart and throat. The astringent qualities are exploited for stopping nose and gum bleeds, toning skin, firming-up sagging breasts (after blending with mustard oil) and treating hemorrhoids. The fruit juice is used as eyedrops to slow the development of cataracts.

RABARBARA

Divje raste na bregovih Volge, ime rabarbara je kombinacija grškega rha=Volga in barbarum=wild. List so strupeni, peclji in koenine pa so užitne in zdravilne. Peclji so hrustljavi in kiselkasti, lahko jih skuhate in uporabite v pitah, džemih, sokovih in sladko-kisli omaki. Kot zdravilna rastlina je najprej omenjene v Kitajski literaturi iz leta 2700 pr. n. št. Nahaja se tudi v arabskih in evropskih srednjeveških preskripcijah. Korenine so močno odvajalne, rastlina ima tudi astringentni efekt na nosno in ustno slusnico.

Rastline so vzgojene z delitvijo matičnjaka, zato hitro zrastejo do odrasle velikosti, ko so primerne za pobiranje. Jeseni bo spet na voljo nekaj sadik, prosim rezervirajte!

RHUBARB

In the wild it grows along the banks of the River Volga and the name rhubarb is a combination of Greek rha=Volga and barbarum=wild. The leaves are toxic, but leaf stalks and roots have culinary and medicinal uses. Stalks are crisp with a strong tart taste and can be cooked and used in pies, jams, juices, sweet and sour sauce. As a medicinal plant it is first mentioned in Chinese literature in 2700 BC. It appears in medieval Arabic and European prescriptions. Its roots have strong laxative properties, it also has an astringent effect on the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose.

Plants cultivated by division of stock ensure a large plant and crop quickly. There will be a few plants available in Autumn, please make a reservation!

Ribes vsebuje užitna grozdičevja (črni, rdeči in beli ribez), kosmulje in številne okrasne rastline. Vsega skupaj rod obsega okoli 150 vrst razširjenih vsej severni polobli.

Korenina in semena različnih ribezov vsebujejo veliko gama-linolenske kisline (GLA), ki je učinkovito sredstvo proti pred-menstrualnemu. Mnogo različnih vrst ima razne uporabe v Evropski in Indijanski medicini. Trenutno razmnožujemo BELI RIBEZ in JOSTO (križanec med črnim ribezom in kosmuljo), nekaj rastlin bo na voljo kasneje v letu. Vsi ribezi, ki jih prodajamo, bodo imeli PLODOVE V PRVEM LETU.

CURRANT

Ribes includes the edible currants (blackcurrant, redcurrant and whitecurrant), gooseberries, and many ornamental plants. Altogether there are 150 species throughout temperate Northern Hemisphere.

Currant root and seeds are high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an effective treatment for pre-menstrual syndrome. Many species are used in traditional European and Native American medicines.

We are currently propagating white currant and jostaberry (gooseberry/blackcurrant hybrid), some plants may be available later this year. All plants sold here will fruit in the first year.

ROŽMARIN

Sveže in posušene liste se uporablja v tradicionalnih mediteranskih kuhinjah. Iz njih se lahko skuha tudi čaj. Listi vsebujejo zelo veliko železa, kalcija in vitamina B6.

Obstajata dva tipa: plazeči in pokončni. Razen tega so vse razlike sicer izrazite, vendar ne tako očitne kot npr. pri vonjavah met ali obarvanosti listov pravega žajblja.

ROSEMARY

Fresh and dried leaves are used in traditional Mediterranean cuisine. A herbal tea is also made from them. The leaves are extremely high in iron, calcium, and Vitamin B6.

There are two types: prostate and upright. Apart from this all other differences are apparent but not as distinct as for example mint scents or leaf color variations of the true sage.

Kot zacimbo naj se uporablja zmerno, saj je izjemno grenka. Uporaba rutice je upadala preko 20 stoletja, tako da je dandanes neznana celo mnogim profesionalnim kuharjem. Listi in plodovi so sestavni del Etiopske kuhinje, prav tako je tradicionalna zacimba sredozemskih dežel. Tudi v pravi istarski travarici mora biti vejica.

In European folk medicine it is used to relieve gas pains and colic, improve appetite and digestion, promote the onset of menstruation, as an ointment for external use against gout, arthritis, rheumatism and neuralgia. As a culinary herb it must be used sparingly as it is incredibly bitter. Its use declined over the 20th century, so today it is largely unknown even to most chefs, and unavailable in grocery stores. Leaves and berries are a part of Ethiopian cuisine it is also a traditional herb in many Mediterranean countries. Recipe for Istrian travarica calls for a sprig of rue.

Približno 600 vrst grmov, trajnic in enoletnic poseljuje Stari Svet in obe Ameriki.

Latinsko ime Salvia pomeni 'zdraviti', sledeče navedbe veljajo za Salvia officinalis: žajbelj ima dolgo zgodovino učinkovite domače zdravilne uporabe pri težavah prebavnega sistema, kot ustno razkužilo za grgranje (boleče grlo, turi, zobobol ipd). V herbalizmu žajbelj uporabljajo notranje pri zdravljenju prekomerne laktacije, nočnih znojenj, prekomernega slinjenja (kot pri Parkinsonovi bolezni), prekomernega znojenja pri tuberkulozi, živčnosti, depresiji, ženski sterilnosti in težavah povezanih z menopavzo. Zunanje ga uporabljajo pri pikih žuželk, infekcijah kože, grla, ust in dlesni ter proti vaginalnem izcedku. Žajblja ne smejo uporabljati nosečnice in epileptiki. Esencialno olje je uporabno v aromaterapiji, je zdravilno, a toksično v velikih odmerkih.

The Latin Salvia means 'to heal', the following are the uses of Salvia officinalis: Sage has a very long history of effective medicinal use as home a remedy for disorders of the digestive system, an antiseptic gargle for the mouth (sore throats, ulcers, toothache etc). In herbalism sage is used internally in the treatment of excessive lactation, night sweats, excessive salivation (as in Parkinson's disease), profuse perspiration (as in TB), anxiety, depression, female sterility and menopausal problems. Externally, it is used to treat insect bites, skin, throat, mouth and gum infections and vaginal discharge. It should not be used by pregnant women or by epileptics.The essential oil is used in aromatherapy and is also medicinal, but toxic in high doses.

BELI KALIFORNIJSKI ŽAJBELJ

Indijanci imajo precej uporab tega žajblja: iz semen pripravljajo moko, listi so začimba, jedo pa jih tudi dimljene, iz zmečkanih in pomešanih z vodo pa pripravijo šampon za lase. Kot zdravilo: čaj za zdravljenje prehladov, zmanjševanje znojenja, slinjenja, in izločanja sluzi v sinusih, gtlu in pljučih. Hladen čaj je tonik za želodec, deluje pa tudi hemostatično na maternico pri premočnih menstruacijah (a lahko zmanjša izločanje materinega mleka). Beli žajbelj je za mnoga Indijanska plemena sveta rastlina, iz listov izdelujejo kadilne paličice. Goreči listi naj bi očistili prostor vseh zlih duhov oz. 'negativnih' energij, obenem pa vnesejo 'pozitivne' energije.

WHITE CALIFORNIAN SAGE / SACRED SAGE

Native Americans have several uses for this plant: seeds are ground into flour, leaves are a spice and are also eaten smoked, crushed and mixed with water to create a shampoo. Medicinally: tea is as a remedy for colds, decreases sweating, salivation, and mucous secretions in the sinuses, throat, and lungs. Cold tea is a stomach tonic and a uterine hemostatic tea for heavy menstruation (but it can also decrease lactation).White sage is considered sacred by many Native Americans and is used to make smudge sticks. When leaves are burned they are believed to cleanse a space of any evil spirits or 'negative' energies, while also bringing in 'positive' energies.

Aromatični listi in stebla se lahko uporabijo za čaj ali kot začimba. As a medicinal plant it is used in the treatment of heart complaints, leaves can be chewed to treat abdominal pains, a  poultice of heated leaves treats ear pains and sore throat, a decoction treats of chronic bronchial cough and in a  bath in the treatment of paralysis.

GREJFRUT ŽAJBELJ / MUŠKATNA KADULJA

V namene parfumerske industrije ga gojijo v Angliji, Franciji in južni Rusiji. Ima saden vonj, ki močno spominja na grejfrut. Listi so uporabni kot zelenjava. Preden je hmelj postal povsod dostopen so z grejfrutno kaduljo pripravljali pivo. Vcasih z njo zacinijo tudi vino, predvsem muškat. Poleg uporabnosti je ta kadulja tudi zelo lepa rastlina.

CLARY / MUSK / GRAPEFRUIT SAGE

Grown in England, France, and southern Russia for the perfume industry. Its scent is fruity, reminiscent of grapefruit. The leaves are used as a vegetable. It was used to flavor beer before the use of hops became common. It is sometimes used to flavor wine, notably muscatel. Also clary is a very beautiful plant.
