Obsatja nekaj alkoholnih pijač z kaktusovimi figami: colonche v Mehiki, ficodi na Siciliji, Bajtra na Malti in žganje tungi na otoku sete Helene.V Mehiki mlade dele stebel (nopales) nabirajo preden trni otrdijo. Narežejo jih na tanke rezine in ocvrejo z jajci in jalapeño čiliji za zajtrk. Opuncija je tudi prehranski dodatek, ki znižuje oksidativni stres in znižuje nivo lipidov v krvi. |
PRICKLY PEAR / FIG OPUNTIA / TUNA A species of cactus and an important crop in arid and semiarid regions. Areas with significant pricly pear production are Mexico, Spain, Southern Italy (fico d'India / ficodinnia), Greece, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Chile, Brazil, Turkey, Eritrea and Ethiopia (beles). The fruits are eaten after chilling in a refrigerator for a few hours. They have a taste similar to a juicy, extra sweet watermelon. The fruits can also be made into jams and jellies. Several alcoholic drinks include pricly-pears: colonche in Mexico, ficodi on Sicily, bajtra on Malta and tungi spirit on the island of Saint Helena. In Mexico the young cactus pads (nopales) are picked before the spines harden. They are sliced into strips and fried with eggs and jalapeños and served as breakfast. Opuntia is also a dietary supplement to decrease oxidative stress and lower blood lipid levels. |

PASIJONKA / TRPLJENKA Passiflora je rod približno 500 vrst cvetnic, ki so večinoma ovijalke in razširjene po vseh kontinentih razen Antarktike in Afrike. Cvet pasijonke je nacijonalna cvetlica Paragvaja. Nekatere vrste imajo užitne plodove, druge so v etnobotanični uporabi in nekatere so v kulturi samo zato ker so preprosto lepe. Pasijonka ima religijsko povezavo, kar lahko vidimo že v imenu, ki so ji ga nadeli Krščanski misijonarji v J Ameriki. Ti misijonarji (pridružili so je jim tudi Španski konkvistadorji) so videli način pokristjanjevanja Indijancev, ki so preživeli invazijo Evropejcev. Rastino so razližili preko krščanske mitologije: Tri brazde pestiča so trije žeblji v Jezusovih rokah in nogah. Sterilne prašnične niti so simbol krone iz trnov. Pet prašnikov predstavlja pet ran. Deset cvetnih listov predstavlja apostole (razen Jude in Petra). Vitice pa predstavljajo biče. |
PASSION FLOWER Passiflora are a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants who are mostly vines and found worldwide except in Antarctica and Africa. The flower of the passion fruit is the national flower of Paraguay. Some species have edible fruits, some are in use as ethnobotanicals and some are grown just because they are beautifull. The passion fruit has a religious association as reflected by the name given to it by Catholic missionaries in South America. These missionaries (who were joined by the Spanish Conquistadors) saw a way of Christianizing the Native Americans who survived the European invasion by explaining the plant through Christian mythology: The three stigmas reflect the three nails in Jesus 's hands and feet. The threads of the passion flower are a symbol of the Crown of Thorns. The vine's tendrils are the whips. The five anthers represent the five wounds. The ten petals and sepals are the Apostles (excluding Judas and Peter). |

Tomatillo je naravno želirno sredstvo za džeme, čatnije, reliše in salse. Druga imena so tudi: tomate de cáscara, tomate de fresadilla, tomate milpero, miltomate. Zreli sadeži ostanejo sveži v hladnem prostoru do dva meseca. Lahko jih tudi zmrznete. Rastline tomatilla se same ne oprašijo (za pridelek je potrebno imeti dve ali več rastlin). |
