META

Mete so zdravilna zelišča, v ta namen se jih pripravlja kot čaje. Imajo sproščujoč vpliv in zmanjšujejo stres. Imajo tudi proti-bakterijsko in proti-virusno delovanje.

Osnovne vrste dopolnjujejo moderne sorte z prijetnimi sadnimi vonji in vonji po drugih zeliščih, na ta način je uporabnost met v kulinariki vse večja. Poleg tega so različne pisane ali pritlikave sorte lepe okrasne rastline, zaradi svoje nezahtevnosti pa so vse mete primerne tudi za omejene prostore, npr. v visečih košarah in majhnih balkonskih koritih.

MINT

Mints are medicinal herbs and as such prepared as a herbal tea. They have a calming effect and reduce stress. They also have antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Basic species are complemented with modern cultivars that boast nice fruity flavours and flavours reminiscent of other herbs, thus making mints ever more useful in gastronomy. Also many variegated and small species are nice ornamental plants and as all mints are really easy to grow they are all very appropriate for growing where space is limited in eg. hanging baskets and small pots.

BERGAMOTKA

Kar nekaj vrst bergamotk ima dolgo zgodovino uporabe pri ameriških indijancih iz plemen Črnih Nog, Menominee, Ojibwa and Winnebago. Indijanci so odkrili močan antiseptičen učinek teh rastlin in so jih zmečkane polagali na manjše rane in kožna vnetja. Poparek je uporaben pri zdravljenju vnetij v ustih in grlu, npr. gingivitis. Čaj iz zmečkanih listov pomaga pri glavobolih in vročini. Okus rastlin večinoma spominja na mešanico spearminta, peperminta in origana in je dokaj grenak, saj vsebuje precej timola. Čaj sladkamo z medom. Z bergamotko so indijanci tudi začinjali divjačino, predvsem ptice.

BERGAMOT / BEE BALM

Several Monarda species have a long history of use as a medicinal plants by many Native Americans including the Blackfoot, Menominee, Ojibwa and Winnebago. They recognized the strong antiseptic action of these plants and usee poultices for skin infections and minor wounds. A tea is used to treat mouth and throat infections, like gingivitis. An infusion of crushed leaves in boiling water treats headaches and fevers. Although somewhat bitter, due to the thymol content, the plants generally taste like a mix of spearmint and peppermint with oregano. The tea may be sweetened with honey. Bee balm was traditionally used by Native Americans as a seasoning for wild game, particularly birds.

MAČJA META

Za razliko od pravih met mačja meta nima mentolastega vonja. Njen nežen vonj pa ugaja mačkam, ki se rade zadržujejo kje blizu – od tu ime mačja meta. Njena uporabna vrednost sega od zdravilnega zelišča do repelenta, aktivna učinkovina pa je nepetalacton.

Kot zdravilno zelišče jo pripravimo kot čaj. Uporabna je proti nepravilnostim v delovanju prebavil in, ker pospešuje znojenje, pri blaženju simptomov prehlada in gripe. Zaradi prijetnega okusa in nežnega delovanja je primerna za blaženje prehladov, grip in vročine pri otrocih. Njena učinkovitost se poveča pri kombiniranju z cvetovi bezga (Sambucus nigra). Zelo je učinkovita tudi blaži nemirnost in nervozo. Močan čaj je v obkladkih učinkovit tudi proti udarninam kot so na primer črne oči.

Eterično olje mačje mete dobljeno s parno destilacijo odganja žuželke kot so komarji, ščurki in termiti. Raziskave kažejo da nepetalacton odganja komarje 10 x bolj učinkovito kot DEET, aktivna sestavina večine komercialnih repelentov. Močan čaj (ohlajen) popršen po preprogah ali dlaki živali iz njih odganja bolhe.

CATNIP / CATMINT

Contrary to true mints catmint/catnip doesn't have the minty scent. Its subtle fragrance also pleases cats that like so be in its vicinity – thus the name catmint. Its uses range from a medicinal plant to repellent.

As a medicinal plant it is prepared as a herbal tea. It is used for treating disorders of the digestive system and, as it stimulates sweating, it is useful in reducing fevers and colds. The herbs pleasant taste and gentle action makes it suitable for treating colds, flu and fevers in children. It is more effective when used in conjunction with elder flower (Sambucus nigra). It is also very useful in the treatment of restlessness and nervousness. The infusion is also applied externally to bruises, especially black eyes.

Oil isolated from catnip by steam distillation is a repellent against insects like mosquitoes, cockroaches and termites. Research suggests that nepetalacton repels mosquitoes 10 x more effectively than DEET, the active ingredient in most commercial insect repellents. A strong infusion (cooled down) can be used to repel fleas from carpets or the fur of animals.
